The optimal development of the grapevine root system is essential to achieving full production potential in both yield and quality. From the vine's establishment after planting, root activity largely determines its capacity for formation and growth.
Once the vineyard enters production, the root system influences quality and yield for three reasons (Ruiz, 2005): First, roots are the main factor in carbohydrate balance in the vine. Second, they supply water and nutrients for aerial growth and fruit production. Third, they collect positive or negative signals from the soil that are transmitted biochemically to the aerial parts, directly impacting fruit quality.
