Among the main problems in apple cultivars are fruit drop and reduced caliber during early development. These problems are partly associated with climatic variations in production regions and partly with issues arising from different production management systems.
The state of Chihuahua contributes 55% of Mexico's apple production. Yield losses from fruit drop caused by adverse environmental conditions range from 14% to 32%. Considering that in 2014 the state had 26,666 hectares in production (SAGARPA), the economic impact of poor fruit set represents millions of pesos in losses for producers.
Photosynthetic stimulation during the critical fruit set period is a key strategy to reduce premature fruit drop and improve final caliber. Providing metabolic energy at the right moment in the phenological cycle makes the difference between a high-value harvest and one with significant losses.
