Asparagus has a constantly expanding root system that is highly developed and responsible for anchorage, water and nutrient absorption, storage, and circulation (Sanchez y Sanchez, 2009).
Unlike many other vegetable crops, asparagus is a perennial plant whose root system is its main productive asset. Once established, investment in developing and maintaining a robust root system determines productivity for all years of the crop's life, which can extend for decades under optimal conditions.
Applying technologies that stimulate root growth in the first seasons of establishment has a multiplying effect on long-term return on investment. Deeper, more branched roots translate into greater capacity for water and nutrient absorption, higher tolerance to drought, and a more efficient response to fertilization programs.
